Thoughts on the video last night.

I've been haunted all day with thoughts of the man in the iron lung. His tenacity and sheer force of will is truly astounding. In comparison, my daily challenges seem like little annoying gnats. I came across this saying this morning and thought it worth sharing. Proverbs 18:14, "Sickness the spirit of man can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear it?" How lucky we are to work in a field of nurturing and protecting the spirit.. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

what I have been thinking about since viewing this and the other videos over the past classes is that there are so many people who limit others and/or themselves by seeing their limitations. This directly limits their ability to view their possibilities. Another thing that I was wondering about is how these people's parents viewed them as they were growing up ( this I believe is a big part to what they do today). It also makes me think about all of the parents who are fearful, resistant, and really do not want to have a child with even a milder disability as they focus on the negatives. Not to get political, but I wonder about how many more amazing stories could we have if abortion wasn't such a large part of our culture. How many more minds could there be that could create assistive technologies and other discoveries possibly even cures that are do not exist becuase they are not a part of our world. One of the reasons I try and add a variety of videos is to SHOW the possibilities-- As we discuss this, with the clip still fresh in our mind, I believe the potentials can grow-- While you do not HAVE to see them, it sure enhances our understanding Do you find this valuable?

I like watching the videos. There are days when I feel sorry for myself and just want to give up on certain things. Looking at the amazing people in these videos, makes me want to continue to try. They face such adversity, and yet they are living productive lives. How amazing! I have shared some of these stories with my sister who has a handicapped son. She some times wonders what kind of adult life he will have after she is gone. With these stories is hope. Hope that some day he will be able to contribute to society and participate in a full, active life. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks, Mary! I so agree with your sentiment. It is easy to begin to be overwhelmed with the obstacles we are faced with without severe disabilities, either pysical or mental, etc. These videos really do help to put things in to perspective. The will , desire, perseverance, and respect for life that is depicted is very inspiring.

Elizabeth, you are so right about your thought/question regarding abortion -- I was sort of hinting at that the other night. On Tuesday night on the way home from class, I heard on the radio that the morning after pill is going to be made available to seventeen year olds without parental consent. It makes me feel very sad -- almost as sad as parents who choose to abort a child when they learn the child would be born with some sort of "problem." Every life has value and can offer something wonderful to the world.

What that video made me think of, is how experimentally assistive technology is and how brave the people must be to try these new devices.
To me the iron lung looked scary because it was so overpowering and had a medival appearance.

I am amazed and astonished also on how these amazing people with disabilities perservere and accomplish goals that they have created for themselves. If I only had half of the drive and willpower as they.
