I have shown you somethings in class that would indicate we are heading towards "personalizing" health care-- In class Tuesday, I discussed the potential $100 DNA charts Take a look at this; http://www.technologyreview.com/video/?vid=323 and also I had wanted you to see the video on the Brain;

Thanks for sharing the clips. The Health Vault is an interesting concept, but i would be concerned with how the info could be used. The brain power clip was amazing! I really enjoyed it. People are innovative, to say the least -- it is just mind boggling what people can program computers to do. Imagine how isolated people would be without technology!

"Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever be explaining things to them." ~Antoine De Saint-Exupery I find this quote helpful in reminding me that a child's perspective is so different than mine, and when teaching them, theirs is the one that is most important. I think Will Smith said it a little differently, but it did have a good beat, and I could dance to it! =}

You are right, Elizabeth, and with the new RtI model being implemented and followed, fewer students will be referred for special ed testing and therefore there will be fewer students with IEPs per se. Many teachers, especially those in gen ed, don't put themselves second to their students either way (IEP, or not). If there is an IEP, the expectations sort of drop and the student is not pushed to excel. I think that with RtI, teachers are forced to modify their teaching style to meet the needs of the students who are having difficulty and in this way may be forced to see things from the child's perspective.

If assistive technology is bought on a child's behalf solely for the use of that child so that he has access to the general education curriculum, does the device stay with the student even if he leaves the district or transitions out of school and into the world or does it belong to the district? Furthermore, whose fiduciary responsibility is it to fund assistive technology needs as the student transitions out of the district and into adult life?

I've been haunted all day with thoughts of the man in the iron lung. His tenacity and sheer force of will is truly astounding. In comparison, my daily challenges seem like little annoying gnats. I came across this saying this morning and thought it worth sharing. Proverbs 18:14, "Sickness the spirit of man can endure, but when the spirit is broken, who can bear it?" How lucky we are to work in a field of nurturing and protecting the spirit..

As I sub in all the different classes, I get so excited to see all of the different AT that are being used. I never noticed them before. I also start looking at what other types of AT could be used in the classes in teaching or in assistance of the students. It is very exciting that my eyes are open and looking outside the box!

I agree with Kathy. When people come together great things can happen. Listening to others makes me think about different ways things can be accomplished.
